Make sure you use the appropriate level of hand protection to minimize the chance of a hand injury.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><b>Glove Types<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Protective gloves are available in a variety of materials that protect against various hazards:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Latex, butyl, nitrile, neoprene, and synthetics protect against chemical burns, biological hazards, irritation, and dermatitis.<\/li>\n<li>Metal mesh, leather, and canvas protect against cuts, abrasions, punctures, and burns.<\/li>\n<li>Fabric and fabric-coated protect against dirt and abrasions.<\/li>\n<li>Rubber protects against cuts, punctures, and abrasions.<\/li>\n<li>Insulated protects against extreme heat or cold.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Selection Criteria<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When selecting gloves, consider the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What tasks are being performed<\/li>\n<li>Conditions in the work area<\/li>\n<li>Duration and frequency of use<\/li>\n<li>Grip and manual dexterity needed<\/li>\n<li>Puncture and cut resistance needed<\/li>\n<li>Chemical resistance<\/li>\n<li>All other potential hazards<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Safe Practices<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Prior to each use, inspect gloves for:\n<ul>\n<li>Holes or other signs of wear.<\/li>\n<li>Discoloration or stiffness resulting from manufacturing flaws.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>If using disposable gloves, verify they have not been previously worn before use.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Do not use gloves that show defects or excessive wear. <\/strong>Replace defective or excessively worn gloves as needed.<\/li>\n<li>When work is complete, take appropriate precautions when removing gloves to avoid exposure to hazardous materials.\n<ul>\n<li>When appropriate, wash gloved hands before removing gloves.<\/li>\n<li>Pull the gloves\u2019 cuffs over your hand to remove inside out.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Store or dispose of gloves properly after each use.<\/li>\n<li>Wash your hands after disposing of gloves.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact Dennis Rasley, director of Occupational Safety &amp; Health, at ext. 1513 or <a href=\"mailto:dennis.rasley@desales.edu\">dennis.rasley@desales.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Your hands can be subject to numerous potential injuries, especially when working with chemicals, extreme hot or cold temperatures, and sharp, heavy, or abrasive objects and surfaces.
