Salesian Strength: Pope Francis on Diversity
Throughout the next few weeks, this Salesian Strength feature will highlight some quotes and excerpts from Fratelli Tutti, Pope Francis’ latest encyclical on human fraternity and social friendship, especially as they afford an intersection with the University’s core values of gentleness, humility, gratitude, hospitality, and wisdom. Here, we see how the respect and honor of differences, echoing Francis de Sales’ insight of unidiverse, can bring us to hospitality as we appreciate the diversity found in our University community.
The world exists for everyone because all of us were born with the same dignity. Differences of colour, religion, talent, place of birth or residence, and so many others, cannot be used to justify the privileges of some over the rights of all. As a community, we have an obligation to ensure that every person lives with dignity and has sufficient opportunities for his or her integral development. (118)
