/ April 23, 2025/ Faculty, Staff, Students

Lifting heavy items is one of the leading causes of injury in the workplace. Proper lifting technique is key to preventing injuries. Here are some safety tips to keep you strong on the job:

  • Plan the lift:
    • Clear your path of obstacles and ensure your footing is secure before lifting.
  • Team up:
    • Heavy objects are safer to lift with a partner.
  • Posture is key:
    • Stand close to the object, feet shoulder-width apart. Squat, keeping your back straight and core engaged.
  • Lift with your legs:
    • Push through your heels as you straighten your legs to lift.
  • Keep it close:
    • Hold the object snugly against your body throughout the lift.
  • Pivot, don’t twist:
    • Use your feet to turn, keeping your hips and shoulders facing forward.
  • Lower with care:
    • Slowly bend your knees to lower the object.
  • Listen to your body:
    • Pain is a signal to stop. Don’t push yourself beyond your limits.

Remember:

  • Never lift above shoulder height.
  • Don’t hold your breath while lifting.
  • Ask for help if you feel unsure or strained.

Remember, using proper form protects you from injury. Lift smart, not hard, and have a safe and productive day!
